Notes About What Makes Their Style Unique
2:35-2:44 Isolation and clinging to hope are constant themes in Araki’s work
3:05 saying that Gregg’s films are only nihilistic is only characterizing one side of the coin
4:20-4:23 Araki’s films have a romantic taste to them that tends to be overshadowed by doom and gloom
5:47-5:50 The violence and alienation prevalent in Araki’s films is a direct representation of what it is to be queer in the world.
8:18 Teen angst is a driving force in the masterpiece triad of The Teen Apocalypse Trilogy.
8:48-8:56 What Gregg Araki depicts well is a feeling. A feeling of the crushing weight of adolescence, of everything and everyone being such a mindf*#k
13:41-13:51 The way he chooses to explore violence is more palatable than he gets credit for. It’s never done exploitatively. The violence is not voyeuristic. In fact, all the violence in his works occur off-screen or in the dark
As you view films, consider how the cuts, camera angles, shots, and movement work to create particular meanings. Think about how they establish space, privilege certain characters, suggest relationships, and emphasize themes. In addition to shot distances, angles, editing, and camera movement, note details of the narrative, setting, characters, lighting, props, costume, tone, and sound.
6. What “happens” in the plot (Brief description)?
7. How does the film influence particular reactions on the part of viewers (sound, editing, characterization, camera movement, etc.)? Why does the film encourage such reactions?
9. How are the characters costumed and made-up? What does their clothing or makeup reveal about their social standing, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or age? How do costume and makeup convey character?
10. How does the lighting design shape our perception of character, space, or mood?
12. What is the music’s purpose in the film? How does it direct our attention within the image? How does it shape our interpretation of the image? What stands out about the music?
14. Give an example of what a film critic had to say about this film. Use credible sources and cite sources.Example: “The Shawshank Redemption Movie Review (1994) | Roger Ebert.” All Content. N.p., n.d. Web. 24 June 2015.
15. Select one scene no longer than 5 minutes that represents well the whole film and shows relevant cinematic elements. Write a one-sentence description of the scene and record the time of the scene.Example: from 1:05:00 to 1:10:00.Explain why you chose this scene.
PLACE THE TIME STAMP FROM THE SCENE HERE… Example: 00:00:00 – 00:05:00
16.In the selected scene: write a sentence for each of the elements below to justify why this scene best represents the film:
Shots of Mookie and Sal are separated until Sal throws the money at Mookie, Mookie and Sal are finally on the same level after sal lost his shop and is no longer his boss
5)4:50-4:55 cinema is a matter of what is in the frame and what is not

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving)
For the film I had Jayden flap his arms like a bird for the line “watch your profits soar high like a crow”. We had to film the scene with our mixing pot on the last day of production which put us in quite a time crunch for editing but we completed the film anyways.
Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)
We worked with an actor not in our class, in order to do this we had to communicate with another teacher to get him excused to film. Ryley and I sourced the images for the cuts. Additionally, I found some good royalty-free sound effects for the production.
Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)
I brought in the pot we used in the film to “make” the fight milk. I also assisted with positioning and marking where our tripods would go for filming.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version
I really enjoyed this production We had A lot of fun with it.
By October 14th, as part of team 2 as director, I will have evidence of decision-making by following Directing Actors 101: How to Give Clear and Concise Notes for session 1.
Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)
Brainstorming shots with my team, and adjusting shots to be more practical.
Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)
We talked about how we wanted our shots to look, specifically, the intro shot and the throwing of the chocolate bar. I did communicate with my team when I was absent.
Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)
I held the boom mic because the audio person(Ryley) was an actor. I also brought the chocolate bar for the production. I also directed Jayden while he was on the drum set for the intro shot. Additionally, I helped with the lighting
Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)
Based off of this production made me realize how important team bonding and communication are, Ryely was initially hesitant to acting but, we came together as a team to encourage and reassure her.
Reactions to the Final Version
