    Director

    Intention (SMART Goal)

By March 1st as part of team # 2 as director, I will have evidence of following the actor with the camera by following David Fincher for Session 4

    PRE-PRODUCTION – INQUIRY

    Leader(s) in the Field / Exemplary Work(s)

David Fincher– is known for his works The Social Network, Gone Girl, and Fight Club and has been nominated for 3 Academy Awards

Fincher is most widely recognized for his directing method of following the actor with the camera

    Training Source(s)

    1) 0:50-1:10 tilt and tracking are common tools in the director toolbox

    2) 1:15-1:26 has the camera match the exact velocity of the character in the frame

    3) 1:45-1:55 takes lots of skill and synchronization with the cinematographer and actor

    4) 2:20-2:25 these shots lock you into the character

    5) 3:20-3:30 behavior is the most important thing

    6) 4:05 e/MOTION

Project Timeline December January 30th- March 1st

storyboard with input from the screenwriter

communicate with actors and cinematographer about synchronization

    practice movement synchronization with actors/cinematographer

film a clip with movement synchronization

review the clip and re-direct if needed

    continue filming

review footage after each shot to ensure that the directing method is giving the desired effect

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving)

As director, I formulated the storyboard and built tension within it.

we added additional shots of me moving papers to keep the tension.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

I was acting and had Ryley take over some of the direction in the film.

we had Jayden do the calender shot because he is good at the fast zooms we wanted to obtain.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

we took inspiration from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The world for our dramatic and fast shots.

additionally, we followed David Fincher’s directing style

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

    Reactions to the Final Version

James Clark said that our film is lacking resolution

Mr. LeDuc said that my direction I had throughout my process came through in the final film

    Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I feel as though this production was quite rocky and felt incomplete.

    Director’s Name: Gregg Araki

Link to their IMDB.com page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000777/

Video essay link or embedded YouTube clip about the director or their directing style: https://youtu.be/cKxNEjcCUTo

Notes About What Makes Their Style Unique

2:35-2:44 Isolation and clinging to hope are constant themes in Araki’s work

3:05 saying that Gregg’s films are only nihilistic is only characterizing one side of the coin

4:20-4:23 Araki’s films have a romantic taste to them that tends to be overshadowed by doom and gloom

5:47-5:50 The violence and alienation prevalent in Araki’s films is a direct representation of what it is to be queer in the world.

8:18 Teen angst is a driving force in the masterpiece triad of The Teen Apocalypse Trilogy.

8:48-8:56 What Gregg Araki depicts well is a feeling. A feeling of the crushing weight of adolescence, of everything and everyone being such a mindf*#k

13:41-13:51 The way he chooses to explore violence is more palatable than he gets credit for. It’s never done exploitatively. The violence is not voyeuristic. In fact, all the violence in his works occur off-screen or in the dark

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving)

For the film I had Jayden flap his arms like a bird for the line “watch your profits soar high like a crow”. We had to film the scene with our mixing pot on the last day of production which put us in quite a time crunch for editing but we completed the film anyways.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

We worked with an actor not in our class, in order to do this we had to communicate with another teacher to get him excused to film. Ryley and I sourced the images for the cuts. Additionally, I found some good royalty-free sound effects for the production.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

I brought in the pot we used in the film to “make” the fight milk. I also assisted with positioning and marking where our tripods would go for filming.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

    Reactions to the Final Version

    Laughter and got called camp.

    Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I really enjoyed this production We had A lot of fun with it.

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

Brainstorming shots with my team, and adjusting shots to be more practical.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

We talked about how we wanted our shots to look, specifically, the intro shot and the throwing of the chocolate bar. I did communicate with my team when I was absent.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

I held the boom mic because the audio person(Ryley) was an actor. I also brought the chocolate bar for the production. I also directed Jayden while he was on the drum set for the intro shot. Additionally, I helped with the lighting

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

Based off of this production made me realize how important team bonding and communication are, Ryely was initially hesitant to acting but, we came together as a team to encourage and reassure her.
